Small sisters battle multiple illnesses
A couple in Hanoi are calling for financial support to help treat their two ill children who are suffering from multiple illnesses.
Doan Manh Lam and Hoang Thi Minh got married and have two children together. Lam said he was ecstatic when their first child, Thuy Duong, was born nearly four years ago. But on that day, they were informed that their first child has multiple defects such as polyarthritis, leg muscle atrophy, lack of an anus and ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory disease that can fuse vertebrae in the spine.
While Lam and Minh were struggling to bring Duong to multiple hospitals, they were happy when their second child was born healthily. Yet one year later, their youngest daughter had a high fever and seizures and was diagnosed with congenital immunodeficiency.
"Doctors said she must be monitored closely and needed regular immunological preparations transfusion," Lam said.
"I was a gravel porter for VND200,000 (USD8.8) a day. But since my children are sick, I can't do anything. Some days, the whole family had to share one package of instant noodles since we are still owing relatives and lenders huge money. I and my wife even thought of killing ourselves and our children with sleeping pills," Lam said.
Dr Nguyen Thi Hong Van from St. Paul Hospital said they were having difficulties in treating Thuy Duong's multiple defects. However, because of the number of illnesses and the family's financial difficulties that Duong's treatment is being prolonged.
