Readers build house for soldier's widow

Dan Tri Newspaper and leaders of Thanh Hoa Province transferred a new house for a soldier's widow in the province on September 19.

Luong Khac Thu died in the American War and left behind his wife Pham Thi Mieng and three children. One of her children died and her daughter has not visited her for seven years. Her son is living in Hue and visited her once a year.

At 82 years old, Mieng is living alone in a dilapidated house which has holes in the roof. Her wish is to build a proper house for her husband's altar before she dies.

After her story was published, many people have called and given VND55,415,000 (USD2,400) to build a house for her. The organisers of the People's Army Newspaper Cup bicycle race collaborated with Dan Tri Newspaper to give Mieng a VND70m (USD3,000) donation. The authorities of Hoang Hoa District People's Committee donated VND20m (USD880).

Construction was started on July 20. The VND170m house is completed and transferred to Mieng on September 19. On the same day, Dan Tri Newspaper gave her VND5m.

Khuong Duy Son, vice chairman of Hoang Khanh Commune said building a new house was also the local authorities' wish to pay tribute to deceased soldiers and their families.

"I want to express gratitude to everyone that helped Mieng," he said.

Truong Thanh Que, vice head of the communal Department of Invalids, Labour and Social Affairs also expressed gratitude to the donors and hoped that the community would help other disadvantaged cases in their areas.
