Orphaned sisters long for a full meal
Three Jrai ethnic sisters in Gia Lai Province need help to escape poverty after losing both parents.
The oldest sister, 17-year-old KPuih Nga has to work as a porter to support her sisters.
Nga said because of poverty, she has never been to school. Their father died when she was ten years old and their mother committed suicide four years later. The neighbours had donated rice and money to help them hold a funeral.
However, the sisters still have to face a VND8m (USD352) debt incurred while their house was being built. Their house has become dilapidated and they do not have anything valuable. Some days, Nga has to ask neighbours for some rice to feed her sisters.
"There were some people came to our house and said that they wanted to adopt my sisters but I refused. I'll raise them," she said. "I don't know how to read so I want my sisters to go to schools and escape poverty."
Le Thi Kim Hue, an official of Alba Commune People's Committee, said Nga's family did not have any cultivated land so everything was on Nga's shoulders.
"We can only help them so much because there are many poor households in the area," Hue said.
