Poor mother gives son sleeping pills for painkillers
A family in Yen Bai Province is calling for financial support to treat their son who has been suffering from leukaemia for seven years.
9-year-old Nguyen Minh Tu and his twin Nguyen Minh Tuan were born prematurely and had to stay in the incubators for four months. Then when they could go home, their mother's breast milk stopped.
A few days after being released, Tu cried and refused to eat. He was diagnosed with congenital heart disease and needs to take medicines regularly. Two years later, Tu had a high fever and was diagnosed with leukaemia.
His mother was shocked and wandered the streets the whole day with Tu until they were found by their family. The family had borrowed money from everywhere and sold their house for VND300m (USD13,200). Tu's parents also try to find any work they can to earn money.
Tu's mother, La Thi Quynh Hoa, said, "We have sold our blood when we ran out of money. Sometimes, I thought I lost them for sure. There was a time, my husband fainted because he didn't eat anything and tried to borrow money until midnight then went on to sell his blood in the morning."
Tu looks pale and swollen. Recently, he often has a high fever and the pain keeps coming. Seeing how much pain her son was in, Hoa has given him sleeping pills so that he can forget the pain for a while.
Tran Bang Nang, head of Dong Danh 3 Village, said, "All of their family members are farmers so they can't help much. We hope the community will help the children get treatment."
