Fifth grader takes care of ill parents alone
An 11-year-old girl in Ha Tinh Province has also to take care of her mother who has cancer and father with acute myelitis.
Her mother Nguyen Thi Tam has a brain tumour and went through two operations. She is too weak to even speak long. Half of her body is almost paralysed. Thao's father, Nguyen Van Long, is suffering from acute myelitis and breast swelling.
"My wife was diagnosed with brain cancer when we had our eldest daughter. We borrowed hundreds of millions of VND but my wife's fate is still unsure. I fell ill for over a year. It started when I felt such an intense pain at work," Long said. "Our incomes come from the rice fields and my monthly salary of just over VND1m."
Thao becomes the family's pillar as she has to take care of all housework, her little sister and parents. Despite the hardship, she studies hard.
