A poor couple in the southern province of Dong Nai is seeking for financial support to save their little son who is in critical condition after drinking petrol.

Vu Gia Bao, 17 months old, is now staying at HCM City Children’s Hospital for the intensive treatment. He has been lying unconscious for nearly a week since the accident happened.

His mother Nguyen Thi Tuyet said that on March 14, she and her husband went to work so Bao was taken care of by his paternal grandfather. While playing, Bao picked up a bottle and drank from it. Right after that, he suffered from breathing difficulties and became fainted. The bottle contained petrol.

The boy was transferred to HCM City Children's Hospital.

Nguyen Minh Tien, deputy director of HCM City Children's Hospital, said that the boy was hospitalised in the state of respiratory distress. Tests showed that he faces damaged liver, kidney and lungs. He may need extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which is very costly.

“We try to do everything to earn money to cover the hospital fees. But, how we can afford hundreds of millions of VND,” Son said.

Despite having a health insurance card for children below six, Bao needs high-tech treatments which are partially covered by the health insurance. Each ECMO treatment costs around VND150 million (USD6,818). He is now being treated with strong antibiotics which also cost VND4-5 million per day.

The poor couple just await their son’s death as they are totally powerless to save him.

Nguyen Hai Tinh, head of Nam Ha Village where the boy’s family lives in, said the family were among the poorest in the locality. The couple have two other small children.
