Brothers battle against thalassemia

A family in Thua Thien-Hue Province is calling for financial support to help cover treatment for her two sons who are both suffering from thalassemia.

  

Huong takes care of two sons in hospital


Tran Quoc Kim was the breadwinner of the family. He found any job he could do to support his wife and sons. Unfortunately, after having an accident at work, his health weakened and he could only work as bottled water delivery man for VND2m a month. His wife, Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, works in the fields for additional incomes and their 10-year-old daughter helps out at her aunt's retail store.

Both of their sons, 11-year-old Tran Van Quoc Quy and 5-year-old Tran Van Quoc Bao, are diagnosed with thalassemia and need monthly blood transfusions. Unable to pay for the treatment, the family has to borrow money from neighbours every month. They are also incurring a VND70m (USD3,000) debt from the bank.

"The children are very weak. They often have headaches and can't keep the food down. Sometimes, they had to leave in the middle of a class because they were too tired," Huong said. "We still don't dare to bring our daughter to the hospital because we're afraid that she may be diagnosed with thalassemia too."

Both brothers are being treated at the Paediatrics Centre at Hue Central Hospital. Huong said she would never give up on her children.

Dr Chau Van Ha said both brothers' condition had worsened that's why they need monthly blood transfusions and iron chelation therapy. "The iron chelation therapy is not included in their health insurances. But if they do not take the treatment, the illness may badly affect both their health and intelligence," she said.
