Following up on our previous report about little boy Nghia, it appears he has been discharged in good shape.

After being admitted for surgery at the Eye Microsurgery Center in Leningrad, Russia for a week, all things are looking good so far, however, it will take at least one or two years for his eyes to fully recover.

Doctor Viet Tien in Russia told DTiNews that Doctor Diskalenko Oleg Vitalevich, Manager of the Eye Microsurgery Ward, operated on Nghia’s eyes in order to keep the pupils of his eyes and prevent side-effects due to suffering from ROP at level 5. Unfortunately, this means that the possibility of his complete vision recovery is not very high.

Tran Phuc Nghia has been discharged in good shape

On December 22, Dr. Diskalenko had to spend much more time than usual to operate on both eyes of Nghia because his eyes had endured such serious damage. Normally, children’s vision will be perfect at the age of seven, whereas Nghia is only two so it takes time for his retinas to recover. “It will take about one year for those who have normal eyes without any damage to recover complete vision if their eyes were covered closely for one month.” added Diskalenko.

He also pointed out that in the case of Nghia, laser treatment will not be effective because Vietnamese doctors do not know how to perform the proper surgery.
