Xuan already has three children before giving birth to Y. Since after Y was born, Xuan noticed that the baby's health was much weaker than her siblings. When Y was two months old, Xuan brought her to a clinic as she couldn't stop crying. Doctors said her tear-duct was blocked and she might have heart disease.
She was diagnosed with several illnesses at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital including atrial septal defect and pulmonary valve stenosis. In the end, Xuan decided to bring Y home as they had no money for hospital charges.
"She has breathing difficulties. Sometimes, she was unable to breathe and turned pale. We often sleep on the hammock as she can't breathe when we were lying on the bed," Xuan said.
In early 2017, a charity group from a hospital gave Y a free check-up and told them to have an operation immediately. But Xuan cannot afford VND90m. Their family depends on the small rice fields and have to catch snails and crabs for additional income.
Xuan's husband, Tran Van Ke, has a leg injury so he can't do much hard work.
