Lonely old woman fears isolated death

An elderly and blind woman in Ninh Binh Province needs help to fix her house while fearing that no one will hold a funeral for her.

71-year-old Pham Thi Oc lives on a monthly allowance of VND675,000 (USD29) for disabled people. Oc has been blind since she was small and as she has grown old, she has struggled against poverty, loneliness and illnesses.

During the war, her mother and brother migrated to the south while Oc and her sister stayed at home. They searched for snails and vegetables to eat. Unfortunately, Oc's sister died 10 years ago and Oc has lived alone since then.

Oc has nothing valuable and her blanket to fight winter was given by someone else. She has no one to depend on when she fell ill. Sometimes, her neighbours will come and cook porridge for her. When it rains, her neighbours take her in as Oc's house is too dilapidated with a severely leaking roof.

"I only want to fix this house up so that when I die, my funeral can be held here and the neighbours can light incense for me," she said.

Pham Van Son, chairman of Yen Loc Commune, said, "We also want to fix the house for her but our budget is limited."
