The house of Cu Thi Loan in Ea Tling Town has nearly nothing left but a bed. Loan and her husband are both workers for hire. Last year, they gave birth to their youngest son, Tran Dang Khoa. Their joy didn't last long as Khoa was diagnosed with retinal cancer.
One-year-old Tran Dang Khoa has lost one eye
"When he was two months old, everyone noticed that his eyes didn't react as fast as other kids. We wanted to bring him to the hospital but we couldn't borrow any money. His eyes got worse and looked strange a few months later so I sold my hair to bring him to Dak Lak General Hospital," Loan said.
Loan only thought that Khoa had an eye infection. She was shocked when the doctor said Khoa's left eye couldn't see anything anymore. The family borrowed over VND10m (USD431) from neighbours and relatives to transfer him to Eye Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City where he was diagnosed with retinal cancer.
An urgent operation was carried out to remove his left eye since the tumour is spreading to the other eye. After the surgery, Khoa was transferred to Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital for chemotherapy.
"I wish that I had borrowed money to bring him to the hospital earlier. I wish I could take this pain for him," the mother said. "We have to go to Eye Hospital for one week, another week at Oncology Hospital and one week at the Children's Hospital. We nearly live inside the hospital and depend on charity meals."
Khoa is at risk of losing the other eye but his family may not be able to support his treatment for long. They have to buy medicines that are not covered in health insurance which cost them VND2m (USD86) to VND3m each month.
