Teachers struggle in mountainous school
School teachers at a remote school in Binh Dinh Province are in need of financial support as they struggle with poor teaching and living conditions.
Vo Muoi, head of An Toan Primary School, said their infrastructure had improved a lot compared to 15 years ago. The most difficulties are the remote locations, winding and dangerous roads. It's especially dangerous for female teachers. During the rainy season, the roads are blocked and they may also lose electricity and mobile phone signals.
"When I first came here, the dirt road made it difficult to use any types of vehicles. If it rained and caused landslide then we couldn't go to school or return home. Now new roads were built but we have to face steep slopes," he said.
Phan Thi Nga, a teacher at An Toan Primary School said, "When going to school, we only bring food enough for one week. If the place is isolated, we have to go to the villages and ask for food."
Binh continued calling for funds and became a bridge connecting Dantri readers with An Toan Primary School. An Toan Primary School has a total of 110 pupils and 18 teachers and guards at three different school sites.
"The teachers only want to have enough fund to build a proper kitchen," Muoi said.
Muoi wants to build a 30-square-metre kitchen. The kitchen will cost around VND130m (USD5,600) to VND150m due to the scarcity of materials and transportation difficulties. The school still lacks a gate and fence but the district's budget is limited.
