Parents call for help to treat ill daughter
A poor couple in Soc Trang Province are calling for financial support to help save their three-year-old daughter from cancer.
Nguyen Van My, Thao's father, said, "My family has many children but we don't have enough rice fields. I dropped out of school in the fifth grade to find work and went to HCM City to work at a slaughterhouse at 16."
After getting married to Bui Thi Kim Ngan, he became a street seller while his wife works at a footwear factory. They tried to save as much money as possible and had a child in 2015. After giving birth to Thao, Ngan stays at home to take care of the child.
Unfortunately, last year, Thao suddenly had a high fever and was diagnosed with leukaemia.
"At first, I couldn't dare tell my wife the diagnosis. I was afraid that she couldn't take it and would become ill," My said.
Thao's legs keep losing muscles and by the end of 2018, she had to use a wheelchair to move around. After being treated at HCM City Oncology Hospital, Thao was able to walk again. Doctors said she responded very well to the treatment. However, her parents are having troubles paying hospital charges.
Thao's parents have to borrow VND40m (USD1,700) from the black market and pay VND200,000 daily interest. However, their income can only afford to pay house rents and can barely pay daily interest. They have to depend on charity meals to live on.
"Whenever doctors take bone marrow samples, she is in severe in pain so I have to hold her down. She kept asking me why I did that even though she hurt so much. If only I can take this pain for her, if only I have more money," Thao's father said.
