Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, director of the hospital, said that in Vietnam, around 16,000 patients need organ transplants related to heart, kidney, liver and lung. Meanwhile, 6,000 people are waiting for cornea transplants.

The National Centre for Co-ordinating Human Organ Transplants under the Ministry of Health was set up in 2013.

Hue Central Hospital started the first organ transplant in 2001. To date, the hospital has carried out nearly 800 kidney transplants, four heart transplants and one heart and lung transplant.

The hospital has co-operated with many international hospitals for organ transplants, including Severance and Yosei hospitals in South Korea.

At the event, Prof. Dr. Trinh Hong Son, director of the National Centre for Co-ordinating Human Organ Transplants, highlighted the closed and effective co-operation between the centre and Hue Central Hospital in organ transplants.
