Le Van Minh, 55, and his son Le Van Dien, 25, are living in a ramshackle 16 square-metre house in Long Thanh Commune, Vinh Loi District.

Minh’s wife left the house without saying a word when their son was just three years old. The family’s conditions became more difficult as the son just stayed in bed due to innate disability. He can’t speak and all his daily activities depend on his father.

Some months ago, Minh felt tired and painful and he was diagnosed with a malignant liver tumour which needs urgent surgery. According to doctors, without timely treatment, he would die.

His relatives and neighbours assisted him to pay the operation fees. His condition has improved but he needs further treatment.

“Every month, I have to go to hospital for the examination and medicine prescription which I can’t afford,” Minh said.

According to the man, his son is the motivation for him to try to live. But he worried that after he dies, how Dien could live.

His family gets a modest monthly subsidy of just VND700,000 (USD30.43) from the government.
