An elderly couple in HCM City have decided to donate their assets worth a total VND100 billion (USD4.34 million) to orphaned children.

Bui Cong Hiep and his wife in Long Truong Ward, District 9, have to date taken care of 85 disadvantaged and orphaned children.

After retiring from the military nearly 10 years ago, Hiep co-operated with his relatives to open a mechanic workshop.

He after that bought a 2,500-square metre land plot to build a three-floor house where was firstly used as the shelter for his workers and unlucky neighbours. He then adopted abandoned children or orphans and then brought up them at the house.

In 2010, he was licensed to establish the Mai Am Thien Than (House of Angels) which has been until now home to 85 children aged between several months old to seven years old.

Recently, he received a girl baby of being just some days old who was abandoned at a rented house in Tan Binh District.

The income from the workshop is the main financial source for the orphanage operation.

Recently, Hiep thought of granting his 2,500 square metre land plot and the house which are worth some VND100 billion for the children being taken care of at the centre. Hiep asked his wife and sons and they all agreed.

Nguyen Ngoc Cuong, vice chairman of District 9 People’s Committee, highly appreciated what Hiep has done.
