Their 10-year-old daughter, Nguyen Thi Thu Thao, was diagnosed with germ cell tumours at HCM City Oncology Hospital a few years ago. Because of poverty, she wasn't treated and her condition worsened over time. Also in April, Thao must be admitted to hospital and take chemotherapy.
Despite the illness, Thao is a hard-working pupil and she dreams of being a teacher in the future. Her 13-year-old brother, Nguyen Chi Thien, wants to be a doctor to help other people like his mother and sister.
"We don't have money. I have to leave the children at home alone to go find work in the city. I only return once every few months but my salary is not enough for their studying and treatment," Nguyen said. "Without your help, I don't know if we can overcome the difficulties."
The children live in a dilapidated house with sparse furniture. They said they felt scared when it rained and their father was not home.
Nguyen Thi Hong Yen, vice chairwoman of Vinh Hung Commune, confirmed that Nguyen's household is one of the poor cases in their area. She hopes that the public will help them.
