"When he was one year old, his belly swelled up so we brought him to the Children's Hospital 2 in HCM City. Doctors said he was in the final stage of kidney cancer and needed chemotherapy to prolong his life. We couldn't believe it," Binh said.
The chemotherapy keeps Hao alive but his testicles were completely ruined as a side effect. Hao had to undergo an operation to remove the tumour.
"I thought that he would die that day. Doctors said he clinically dead for six hours," Binh said.
When Hao was three years old, his mother abandoned the family, leaving him behind to his father and grandparents. Unfortunately, his condition worsened a year later. A large bump appeared on his neck and got bigger and bigger. Right when he arrived at the hospital, Hao fainted from the pain as the bump burst. Binh said the hospital believed they could no longer do anything for Hao, so they returned home.
The family then tried to treat the wound with herbal medicines. A year later, Children's Hospital 1, where Hao is being treated for cancer, also returned him to the family after dozens of tumours appeared and surrounded the kidneys. Even after the operation, the tumour will quickly appear again.
Doctors said Hao couldn't be treated anymore. The best solution is to cut off both kidneys and use hemodialysis treatment to prolong his life for one more month. Hao is still using herbal medicines and chemotherapy to control the tumour.
"We decided to bring him home. If he dies then he'll be whole," said Hao's grandfather. "He loves studying and keeps asking me to let him go to school."
Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, Hao's teacher, said he had to retake grade 1 because he was absent from school for too long. Teachers and pupils alike respect Hao's effort and a positive attitude.
"When the school year started, he visited me and told me that he couldn't live for long. He has always dreamed of being the class president and asked me to give him this position. He gave me eggs and promised to be obedient," Ngoc said.
Ngoc agreed to let Hao be a co-president of the class.
"His will is admirable. Letting him be a co-president is a way to encourage him. We also have to thank him for giving us more motivation to go to school every day," said Le Thi Be, head of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Primary School.
His family already sold everything they have for his treatment. Hao's father is working in Lam Dong Province to support the family.
