Disabled grandmother and granddaughter struggle to live on
An elderly woman and her disabled granddaughter in Vinh Long Province are in desperate need of financial support.
Sen said she had two sons but one died from illnesses. Her husband abandoned them over 30 years ago and already died. Sen can't read or write and doesn't have any expertise so she has sold lotto tickets for 20 years. Her other son can't go to school so he does any works he can to support the family.
When Trinh was born, she was sick constantly. At five years old, her parents divorced and she went to live with Sen. "When I went out to sell lotto tickets, I brought her along. Unfortunately, as she grew up, it's clear that her mind has been stunted," Sen said.
Seeing that Trinh really likes studying, Sen brought her to a free class for special children. However, Sen fell and had a stroke out on the street one day and was paralysed. Since then, she has to depend on Trinh for many things. Sen said she had lived long enough, but she can't leave Trinh alone just yet.
Nguyen Trung Dan, vice chairman of Ward 8 People's Committee, said the authorities and neighbours tried to help Sen's family as much as they could. He hoped that Sen will receive help from the community so that both she and Trinh can go to the hospital and continue on living.
