Dantri readers have sent nearly VND1bn (USD43,000) to support a three-month-old child who was born to a mentally-ill mother in Bac Giang Province.

74-year-old Ha Thi Hao lives with her 3-month-old grandson, Ngo Van Quan, in a small house in Chung Village, Dong Lo Commune, Hiep Hoa District. Quan was later diagnosed with thalassemia and doctors said he should be brought to Hanoi but three months later, Ha still didn't have enough money for treatment.

Hao's husband died 30 years ago, leaving behind four children. Hao said all of her children were slow and their minds were stunted.

Unfortunately, all of her children are in difficulties. Hao used to catch fish and crabs to sell but Hao's health is also deteriorating and it's getting harder and harder to move because she has osteoarthritis.

After their story was published, many people have donated money, milk, clothes and diapers to the family.

"I used to dream of having a fan for my grandson," Hao said. "Now three fans were given to me. The readers also donated to us VND1bn so I deposited the money to raise Quan."

Recently, a charity group in Hiep Hoa District helped bring Quan to the National Institute of Haematology & Blood Transfusion in Hanoi. According to the doctors, Quan is malnourished and needs to be healthier so they will have another check-up six months later.

Nguyen Van Trung, chairman of the Red Cross Organisation in Hiep Hoa District, said, "I'm really grateful to everyone that helped Quan's family. The family said the money was already enough to raise Quan and hope that the donation will come to other needy people."
