Elderly grandmother desperately calls for help for grandsons
An elderly woman in Thanh Hoa Province is in need of financial help to support her mentally-ill son and two small grandsons.
"My husband died 20 years ago. After my son got married and had two children, both he and his wife suddenly suffered from mental illnesses. His wife committed suicide just two weeks ago," Hao said.
According to the neighbours, Hao's son, Le Van Them, used to be healthy and hardworking. He worked hard to build the house and had a happy family. But then in 2008, he started laughing and talking alone and lost memories sometimes. However, he would recover afterwards. Over the years, his condition kept worsening. He didn't work and wandered all day long. At night, he said he had a headache and tried to hit the walls while screaming.
They sold all their valuables for his treatment but there has been no improvement.
"There were times when he would scream and chased us out of the house while it was raining. We could only hug each other and wait until his episode ended to pick the lock and get into the house," Hao said.
In 2014, Them's wife also showed symptoms of having mental illnesses and ran out of the house at midnight. Them often wandered alone while his wife would try to block the cars on the streets. One time, she jumped into the well with one of her sons. Luckily, Hao was able to call for help in time.
"Last week, I found her body after returning from the market. She committed suicide," Hao said.
Since then, Hao has to take care of her ill son and support two small children on her own. Their only income is the monthly allowance for elderly people and mentally-ill people.
"I'm afraid that my grandchildren may have to drop out of school. I already feel exhausted from taking care of our daily meals," she said. "I had thought of killing myself and Them so that my grandchildren would go to the social protection centre."
