Abandoned infant struggles to survive health problems
An abandoned newborn child is in need of financial support to treat various illnesses in HCM City.
Ngoc said the infant still had a part of the ventilator left in his mouth. He could hardly breathe at the time so they reported to the police and brought him to Thu Duc Hospital. The baby has defected nasal septum, bulging eyes and multiple deformities. When he was admitted to the hospital, he weighed 1.4kg and was turning blue due to lack of oxygen.
"Maybe his mother knew he was ill and needed treatment so she left him at the pagoda or maybe he's just a child from an unwanted pregnancy," Ngoc said.
He was given antibiotics and intravenous feeding for a week and on July 26, he recovered and no longer needs the ventilator.
Kim Phuc Thanh from the Department of General Planning at Thu Duc Hospital said, "The tests also showed that he had pneumonia, respiratory failure, sepsis, neonatal jaundice, and conjunctivitis. We are giving him a sedative and antibiotics. There are signs that he had received treatment before but there's no family member so we don't know anything about the pregnancy and what treatment he had received."
When his health improves, he will be given a more thorough check-up to see if there is any damage to the brain, heart and lungs. When he was abandoned, he wore the patient outfit from Can Tho Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The doctors have contacted the Can Tho Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as other hospitals in HCM City but haven't received any response.
Nguyen Thi My Chau, head of the Social Work Office at Thu Duc Hospital, said, "The doctors and nurses donated to buy milk and nappies for him. But he will need to stay in the hospital for a long time and medical treatment afterwards so I hope he will help from the community."
