Dantri/DTiNews readers have donated VND620m (USD26,600) to help cover medical treatment for a four-year-old girl who is suffering from thalassemia.

Ly Thi Hao, head of the social work office, receives the donation on behalf of Anh's family.

A representative of Dantri transferred the donation of VND620,233,000 to the family of Hoang Thi Minh Anh on August 4 at the National Institute of Haematology & Blood Transfusion.

Anh was diagnosed with thalassemia at six months old after she refused to be breastfed and kept crying. Anh's parents have to take care of two children and 97-year-old mother with Nga's little income as a kindergarten teacher. After Anh fell sick, her father had to stop working in the fields in order to take care of her at the hospital.

Luckily, Anh's brother is healthy and can donate stem cells. The success rate of the treatment is 70-80%. However, the family were unable to afford VND500m (USD21,400) to VND700m treatment. As time went by, the chance for Anh to survive also narrowed.

"I cried when so many readers transferred donations to our account. I believe that Anh will be saved and survive thanks to the love and help from the donors and doctors," Nguyen Thi Nga, Anh's mother said. "A retired man in Ca Mau used a part of his pension to help us. I'll never forget that."

Ly Thi Hao, head of the social work office at the hospital also thanked the readers for help. "I hope more people will continue to receive your help in the future," she said.

Anh has started receiving stem cell transplant treatment. She is staying with her father in the quarantine area.
