Mother calls for help for terminally-ill daughter
A family in HCM City is calling for financial support to help save their daughter from cancer.
After Anh was diagnosed with malignant tumours, Anh's parents registered as long-term temporary residence to gain household registration book in HCM City so that they could register Anh for health insurance.
"We worked at bricklayer so we often locked our two children at home. In 2014, after returning home, we found a bump on Anh's head. We didn't think much of it," said Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang, Anh's mother. "But the bump grew and caused much pain for Anh so we brought her to the hospital. Doctors said there's a tumour and it needed to be removed."
At first, everyone thought it was a benign tumour but after the operation and a biopsy, the doctors found out that it was malignant and could spread so Anh needed chemotherapy.
"At that time, we were still paying instalments for our motorbike but we had to sell it immediately to pay hospital charges. But we still can't pay for chemotherapy sessions," Hang said.
Because of the tumours, Anh's joints swelled and the pain was too serious for Anh to walk sometimes. After two years, Anh's condition improved and her family prepared for her to start her first grade.
"I thought we could start anew but two weeks after going to school, her leg broken suddenly so we went to the doctors again and was told that the tumour had spread and Anh is very fragile," Hang said. "Since then, her treatment regime hasn't been completed and doctors had to change medicines several times. We are running out of money, we may not be able to afford the medicine cost anymore."
Hang said when Anh felt better, Hang often sold wet tissues to other patients or sell lotto tickets around the hospital for VND100,000 (USD4) to VND200,000 a day. They have borrowed nearly VND80m and no one wants to lend them money anymore.
