Hundreds of students in need of new classrooms
Teachers in Dak Lak Province are facing lots of challenges.
Whenever the new school year starts, the teachers have to go to each household to persuade the students and their parents to let them go to school in the district. In order to make travelling easier for the students, the teachers had to borrow the village meeting rooms to teach.
Tran Thi Thu, who has worked at Hoa Thien Ly Nursery School for over 10 years, said the teachers took turns to teach at the village meeting rooms every year.
"Their parents are farmers and want them to stay home to look after their siblings while they work in the fields. We had to persuade them so that all of the siblings can go to class," Thu said. "They are poor children so most of them go to the class barefooted."
In Village 9, Vu Bon Commune, the meeting room was also used as a classroom. Head of the village, Truong Van Thanh said, "Since this is not a proper classroom it lacks many things. When there were meetings, the students had to go home. We all hope that the students will get a proper classroom soon."
Tran Thi Thuy, deputy head of Hoa Thien Ly Nursery School, said that there are five village meeting rooms that had been used as classrooms. Each classroom has about 20 students and most classes only have one teacher.
"We have proposed to build new classrooms but the plan can't be realised yet due to lack of money," she said. "Some students went home for lunch, some stayed with us but they didn't have lunch so we bought food for them."
Pham Xuan Vinh, head of Krong Pak Department of Education and Training, said, 100 schools are in need of repair but their budget is only VND13bn. He went on to say that many main school sites are also in need of repair.
