Little girl struggles to survive against cancer
A seven-year-old girl in Phu Yen Province is in need of financial support to treat cancer after going through 18 operations.
"She often cries when the painkiller runs out. Her day starts with a painkiller. She also needs them if she wants to go to sleep," said Luu Thi Le Nguyen, Quynh's mother.
Quynh fell ill at three months old. After treating the tumour on the left knee, another appeared on the thigh and then on the feet.
"She was in pain a whole week after each operation but she could only hug me and cried. It hurt me so much," Nguyen said.
Quynh loves practising writing and talking to friends. Because of weak health and legs, Quynh has to depend on other people if she wants to go to the bathroom at school. But her time staying at school and home only last for a few weeks before she has to go to the hospital in HCM City for treatment. Quynh mother then bought supplies for homeschooling to help Quynh as much as she can.
After 18 operations, it's impossible to continue another operation on Quynh's legs. She was then transferred from Children's Hospital 2 to Gia Dinh People's Hospital for the treatment with ethanol. The treatment, which is carried out once every month or two months, cost the family VND7m (USD301) to VND10m each time.
"Even though her health insurance covers the medicine, there are still fees for hospital's equipment usage which cost from VND10m (USD430) to VND35m. Then there are medicines that are not covered by the insurance," Nguyen said. "We are running out of money and can't borrow from anyone anymore. We have to pay VND7m to VND8m for the medicine each month. The travel costs alone are VND10m. I don't know what to do."
Nguyen is a factory worker with a monthly income of VND5m. Her husband earned VND6m a month as a bricklayer. After Quynh fell ill, her husband went to HCM City to work as a bricklayer during the day and a motorbike taxi driver at night. He sends home VND2m every week and more at the end of the month.
Nguyen Huu Khuong, vice chairman of Hoa Hiep Trung Ward, said, "Quynh's family is one of our difficult cases. Quynh is given a monthly allowance of VND675,000 for disabled people who are under 16 years old."
