Little girl struggles to raise small sister

Nguyen Thi Hien, born in 2007, from Nghe An Province is in need of financial support as she is having to raise her 14-month-old sister as they are nearly abandoned by emotionally unstable mother.

"I already get used to carrying my sister and walking to school. Sometimes we could hitch-hike on my friends' bike," Hien said. "This bike was given to me a few days ago."

Hien said it's been a long time since she has been given new clothes. Her mother bought Hien new clothes when she was still of sound mind a few years ago. One day, Hien was too busy with housework and didn't notice that her sister had climbed out onto a steep nearby hill. Luckily, she didn't fall down.

"I was running around, crying and looking for my sister. In the end, I found her in a bush with bloody knees," Hien said.

Hien doesn't know who her father is as she grew up with her grandmother while her mother left home. In 2018, her mother returned and took Hien away before she became pregnant with Hien's sister. Hien said she also didn't know who her sister's father is. Hien's mother became more unstable during the second pregnancy and threatened to throw Hien's sister away after giving birth to her.

"I told her please don't throw my sister away, I would raise her," Hien said.


  

Hien brings her sister to school

On good days, Hien's mother found a job and showed love to her daughters when she returned home at night. On the bad days, Hien's mother was gone for days and returned with a temper. Since Hien's house doesn't have electricity, she has to charge her flashlight at the neighbour's house so she can use it at night. Hien's grandmother is 80 years old and suffers from arthritis so Hien decided to take her sister to school instead of asking her grandmother to help.

"I had thought about why my life was like this and why everything was so unfair. But then my sister and the dogs came to me and I forgot about it," Hien said.

Nguyen Sy Chung, deputy director of Thanh An Secondary School, said, "We waived the school fees for Hien to encourage her to continue studying but sometimes she was too busy to go to school. Her sister is too small to go to nursery school here. We are calling for help from all teachers and students."

Hien's neighbours also help by fixing her roof or giving her some food.

Nguyen Canh Nam, chairman of Thanh An Commune People's Committee, said, "We have asked the school to help Hien as much as possible. But we can only help them so much."

"I just hope that we will have enough food and I can get into high school. I'm afraid that I will have to drop out of school," Hien said.
