Lai Chau students struggle with leaking classrooms
Teachers and students at a primary school in Lai Chau Province are in need of financial support to upgrade school facilities.
Hoang Trung Ha, head of Nam Han Primary School, said the school land area is too small for all students so they had to temporarily set up three classrooms by the communal cultural house. After 10 years, the classrooms have deteriorated badly and can't shelter the students from the weather anymore.
"The classrooms can collapse anytime. They are hot in summer and too cold in the winter. The teachers have to use plastic bags to block the holes in the walls," Ha said.
This year, about 100 students study at the classrooms and the communal cultural house.
Lu Van Vui, head of Pa Pha Village said the local authorities and people all agreed to let the school build more stable classrooms near the communal cultural house. However, because of a limited budget, the school still can't build new classrooms.
The estimated cost for the three classrooms is about VND200m (USD8,600). Since the materials have to be transported from Lai Chau City, the transportation costs are higher than usual due to mountainous terrain.
Nam Han is one of the most difficult communes in Sin Ho District with 56% of the households are poor and lack of proper education.
Nam Han Commune has 16 villages with a population of 5,300. Most of them are from the Thai ethnic group.
