Thalassemia children in need of help to survive
Two families in Nghe An Province are struggling to support their children who have thalassemia.
Whenever Su went to hospital, his cousin, Ngan Thi May Ly, also accompanied him. Ly and her brother have also been treated for thalassemia.
"All of them have this genetic disease. Both Su and Ly's fathers who are brothers should also have this disease but they refused to be tested or go to the hospital," said nurse Phan Thi Ai.
Su's father said if he went to the hospital, there would be no one left at his house to work and they would fall deeper into debt.
Vy Thi Ty, Su's mother, said, "I was told that he will need blood transfusion all of his life. The cost of stem cell transplant surgery is too high for us. We can hardly afford Su's blood transfusion now. We often waited until he felt really tired to bring him to the hospital. Each time, we had to borrow money too."
"I miss my school and friends," Su said. "I want to be healthy so I can play with my friends and don't have to go to the hospital anymore."
Ty said sometimes, Su would be too tired to walk on his own. She often looks after both Su and Ly at the hospital. The three of them saved money by eating two sets of meals together. When there was not enough food, Ty would give the food to the children even though she is pregnant with another child.
"Doctors said I should get advice in case my unborn child also has thalassemia but I can't do anything now. I can only wish for my children to live well," she said.
