Dantri/DTiNews readers have sent over VND400m (USD17,200) to help a woman in Bac Giang Province to support her son who is suffering from cerebral palsy.

81-year-old Nguyen Thi Duc lives with her 42-year-old son who has cerebral palsy and bed-bound. Duc said her first husband died in 1971. She remarried in 1975 and had two children. Her daughter lives far away and is too poor to help her while her son has cerebral palsy since birth. In 2018, her husband died after suffering from a stroke.

Since then, Duc and her son depend on neighbours' kindness and the little monthly allowance for poor people to live by. They cannot afford meat for their meals for a long time.

On January 30, Dantri representatives transferred VND344,777,700 (USD14,800) to Duc. Duc was moved upon receiving the money. Duc said she would use a part of the money to repair the house and deposit the rest to buy medicines.

According to the elderly woman, after her story was published, many people have visited them and give them both encouragement and gifts such as powder milk, clothes and bedsheets. They also directly gave Duc over VND60m (USD2,500).

"We can properly enjoy this Lunar New Year Festival or Tet," she said. "Many people also told me that they will return to visit us during Tet so we are not so lonely."

Le Thi Duyen, chairwoman of the Red Cross Organisation in Bac Giang, said, "We are very grateful and appreciate the kindness of everyone that helped Duc's family. We want to give the best wishes to all donors for Tet. I hope more help will come to other disadvantaged cases in Bac Giang."

Pham Van Nghi, vice chairman of Hiep Hoa District People's Committee, also expressed gratitude, saying that all the gifts are a huge support to Duc's family.
