Little boy struggles against leukaemia
A mother in Nghe An Province is calling for financial support for her son's bone marrow transplant to treat leukaemia.
"After several tests, he was diagnosed with leukaemia. I didn't know what to think then. I just held him and cried. He was only four years old then," she said.
Nga's son, 11-year-old Nguyen Gia Bao, was admitted to the National Institute Of Hematology & Blood Transfusion. But while they were at the hospital, Nga's mother-in-law suffered from a stroke. Since then, she has speaking and walking difficulties and needs someone by her side to look after her. Nga's father-in-law has diabetes and weak health.
Nga takes care of Bao at the hospital and her husband stays home to look after their mother. They can hardly work and the money ran out.
"Doctors said Bao needed to go to Hanoi once a month for a check-up but I asked them to extend the health checks to once every three months. The cost varied depending on his health. Some trips cost us a total VND30m (USD1,300) to VND40m," Nga said.
The teachers at Bao's school also donated to help him go to the hospital. Bao needs bone marrow transplant which cost over VND1.2bn (USD52,000) which is too much for his family.
"I love going to school," Bao said. "I have teachers and friends. I want to get well soon so that I don't have to take a leave anymore."
