Toan and her children

She recalled the day when her daughter was hospitalised following a high fever and convulsive fits. She was extremely shocked after being told that her daughter had contracted the disease.

Then after that, her youngest child was also diagnosed with the disease.

She even considered suicide. Particularly, at that time, her second child was just a toddler.

Since then, she and her husband have been trying to do different kinds of work to cover the treatment fees for their children. Besides farming work, Toan also works as a porter to earn money. However, she can only work for half of the day to spend the remaining time taking care of her children.

Before the Tet Holiday, she took her daughter to a hospital when she had only VND90,000 (USD3.91). They have to live on charity meals at the hospital. She had sold everything valuable in her house to cover the treatment fees.

Recently, her son has had high fever and breathing difficulties. Doctors said that he needed urgent surgery to remove the spleen, but the family can’t afford the treatment.

Nguyen Thi Thuy Hanh from Thanh Hoa Pediatrics Province said that the boy’s condition is serious with heart failure and anaemia as well. He needs to be hospitalised at least once a month, but over the past few months, he has not yet been taken there due to the family’s financial difficulties.

According to Nguyen Van Hung, chairman of Xuan Khang Commune, Toan’s family is very poor. He hoped that donors could join hands to assist them.
