Quang Binh call for support to build flood-resilient houses

Low-income people in the central province of Quang Binh's Le Thuy District are in need of financial support to build flood-resilient houses to cope with frequent flooding.

Many houses in Le Thuy District are flooded in October 2020

Lying in a low area, Le Thuy District is one of the most flood-prone localities. It faces flooding almost every year.

Reports from local authorities said that in the historic floods last October, over 32,000 houses in the district were deeply submerged for over a week.

Frequent natural disasters have badly affected the lives of local people who mostly depend on agriculture and fishing.

To cope with climate change which may result in more serious flooding, local people and authorities have identified the need to build flood-resilient houses to help keep them safe.

Many families have built multi-storey houses so that they could live on the higher floors during the floods.

However, many low-income people cannot afford such houses.

With support from local authorities and kind donors, several communal flood-resilient houses have been built in several communes. These houses can provide shelter for some 300 people during floods.

Speaking with Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper, chairman of Le Thuy District People's Committee, Dang Dai Tinh, said that they have tried to call for financial support from kind donors and organisations to build flood-resilient houses in the area.

"We are very happy to hear that the United Nations Development Programme are co-operating with the Vietnam Study Promotion Fund, and Dantri Online Newspaper on a campaign to help build 100 houses for low-income people in Le Thuy District," the official said. "We hope that the campaign will receive support from individuals and organisations to soon build these houses for poor people in our area."

On February 5, the Vietnam Study Promotion Fund, Dantri Online Newspaper, and the United Nations Development Programme announced a campaign to help build 100 houses for low-income people in Quang Binh Province's Le Thuy District.
