Mother calls for help to treat son from leukaemia
A single mother in Dak Lak Province is calling for financial support to help cover the treatment for her son who is suffering from leukaemia.
In 2015, Trang had to send her eldest son to live with her sister and ran away to Dong Nai with her daughter who is 17-month-old at the time. In 2019, Trang's son, Tran Tuan Kiet, had a severe fever and need to be transferred to HCM City. He was later diagnosed with cancer.
Trang then sent her daughter to live with her sister and almost stays at the hospital with her son. After the first chemotherapy session, Trang was burdened with another worry when the hospital bill came back with VND117m (USD5,000). With health insurance, Trang had to pay VND38m but it's still too much for her and the treatment is still on-going.
When Kiet was in pain, he could still joke with his mother. "I'm only hurt a bit. Don't you worry, I won't die. I know you don't have money to buy a coffin for me," he said.
The local authorities later listed her family as a poor household to ensure that they had better health insurance benefits. However, she still has to pay over VND10m (USD431) a month for treatment and more for specialist medicines that are not included in health insurance.
"Sometimes I had to buy specialist medicines that cost VND1m (USD43) a bottle," she said. "I know he's hurt but he always puts on a brave front. Before the divorce, he would tell me to hide whenever he heard the sound of his father's bike."
Trang is a worker at a coal mine for VND120,000 (USD5) a day. In order to take care of her son, Trang can't go to work regularly anymore. Trang's parents are also poor and can't help her much. Trang had borrowed from relatives, neighbours and banks and even the black market to pay the hospital charges.
"I don't know what to do now. I just want help for my son," she said.
