Ill family calls for help for better future
A couple in Ben Tre Province is calling for financial support to help cover medical treatment for their ill children.
Vo Tan Viet and Huynh Thi Thuyen have three sons together. However, two of them have mental disabilities. Their eldest son, 21-year-old Vo Vi Khang dropped out from school when he was in the 6th grade. He left home to find jobs but two years ago, he suddenly returned with a daughter. At present he is doing odd jobs for a small income.

Their second child, 15-year-old Vo Tan Duy, also dropped out while in the 6th grade. He was brought to the hospital once a month but his condition didn't improve so the family decided to stop the treatment. Viet and Thuyen put all their hopes into their youngest son who is still in 1st grade.
Six years ago, Viet's mother was diagnosed with heart valve disease so they had to sell the fields and put up their house as collateral for a VND90m (USD3,800) loan. Not long later, Thuyen was diagnosed with lung cancer.

Thuyen has gone through three operations in the past four years and goes to HCM City Oncology Hospital once a week for radiotherapy."If I die now, my children will face a future full of hardship. My husband often has spinal pain and was advised to have a spinal operation. But we can't afford to be more sick and unable to work. We have owed the bank VND240m (USD10,300) in total. We can't even earn enough money to pay the interest," Thuyen said.
Thuyen's husband dries and sells manure to gardeners for VND100,000 (USD4.30) a day.
Tran Diem Phien from the Red Cross Organisation in Ba Tri District said, "The local authorities can only help them so much because of a limited budget. We hope Huyen's family will receive more help from the community."
