Nearly 400 children who come from poor families and ethnic minority groups in Cam Thuy District, Thanh Hoa Province received warm jackets from World Vision last week when local people are suffering a freezing winter.

Children happy with warm jackets

“It’s a long time since I had a nice and warm jacket with a hat, which covers my head and my ears. I like it very much. I feel warm when wearing the jacket to go to school,” said Bui Minh Duong, a Grade-2 student at Cam Long Primary School. “I hope the weather won’t be too cold and other friends will have nice jackets like me.”

Located in a mountainous area, Cam Thuy has a cold winter every year when the temperature falls into as low as 0°C. Local students were allowed to stay at home for nearly a week in early January this year when the temperature was below 8°C.

“Many families are poor here so we feel so sorry when children, particularly, small students, go to school under the severe weather. We advised them to wear more old and new shirts inside but it doesn’t really help them avoid the coldness,” said Mrs Cuc, Vice Principal of Cam Long Primary School. “My colleagues and I all said World Vision’s jackets can help our children keep their body warm even when the temperature is as low as zero degree Centigrade. We’re so happy with the gifts," she added.

Since its Cam Thuy Area Development Programme was commenced in 2002, World Vision has implemented its activities related to education, health, agriculture, microfinance, economic development and the prevention of human trafficking in 12 communes out of the total 20 communes and town of Cam Thuy District .
