Tran Van Khanh, 12, in Nghia Binh Commune in Nghia Dan District has been diagnosed with leukodystrophy which causes him to be bed-ridden.

His mother Nguyen Thi Hang, 41, almost has to stay at home all day to take care of him in case of his convulsive fits.

Hang said that she has two children, Khanh and his sister Tran Thi Thanh Huyen, 18.

At the age of 10 years old, When Khanh was at school, his eyes suddenly became dim, affecting his study. After many tests and examinations, doctors at the National Hospital for Paediatrics concluded that he faced leukodystrophy.

According to doctors, only one for every 16 million people in the world incurs the disease. Besides, the treatment fees for the disease is very costly, Hang said, adding that some kinds of medicine cost up to VND100,000 (USD4.34) per tablet.

Despite being provided with intensive treatment, Khanh’s condition did not improve. Doctors advised his family to take his home, instead of the inpatient treatment, to help his family to cut down the fees. Khanh is taken to the National Hospital for Paediatrics for being examined every three months.

Besides the farming work, Khanh’s father is working as a seasonal labourer for a company which pays him VND3 million per month.

Due to the family’s financial difficulties, Khanh’s sister had to suspend her dream to become a university student.
