Ethnic woman calls for help in order to walk again
A woman from the Thai ethnic group in Bac Kan Province is in need of financial support to help cover her hospital charges.
Thai is the oldest of the two siblings. Her parents are farmers in a small village and Thai wants to be a teacher in her own village.
"I was in 10th grade when my right knee joint hurt. I was first diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease at Bac Kan General Hospital but my condition didn't get any better so I just returned home and took traditional medicines," Thai said.
In the following year, she was brought to Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi but her pain still got worse to the point that she couldn't ride a bicycle anymore.
"I had to ask my friends to carry me to school, the pain and the look from other people haunted me," she said.
In 2014, both of her legs were paralysed and the hip joint pain intensified. She was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis at Military Central Hospital 108. Thai needs her hip joints and knee joints replaced. However, the VND95m (USD4,100) surgery and other fees are too much for the family.
Lam Van Thanh, Thai's father, said he borrowed everyone for the first operation and now he struggled to find enough money for the next operation.
"I've never expected strangers to help me but now I don't know what to do. I don't want to lie in bed for the rest of my life. I really hope people will help me," Thai said.
Nong Van Hoan, vice chairman of Cu Le Commune People's Committee said Thai's family was one of the poorest families in their area.
"We can only help them so much due to limited budget. We hope she will get help to get better," Hoan said.
