The family of Trieu Thi Luan in Bac Kan Province started construction of a new house using donations from Dantri/Dtinews readers on August 7.

On August 7, Trieu Thi Luan started the construction of her new house in Cho Don District after receiving VND290 million (USD12,608) from Dantri/Dtinews.

"We have decided to use part of the donation to build a 50-square-metre house to replace our old house which has deteriorated," Luan said.

The 46-year-old woman said besides the donations transferred by Dantri/Dtinews Online Newspaper, she has received lots of calls from people in and outside the country who expressed their sympathy to her family.

"A woman from Ho Chi Minh City called me saying that she was facing difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic but she still decided to send some money to support me after reading about my story," Lam said in tears. "Some kind donors also came to take my ill husband to hospital and he is recovering well now."

Lam got serious burns at the age of 11. Her poor family could not afford proper treatment and she used to live with the inferiority complex until a charity group supported skin graft surgery for her in 2006 when she was 31 years old.

When being treated at the National Institute of Burns, she met Phan Van Diem and they got married after that. They now have two sons aged 14 and 11.

Although the burns on her face and neck have improved since surgery, Luan's health is still very weak and the couple can only make ends meet with farming work.

Then her husband suddenly fainted while working on the farm in 2019. He was brought to hospital and was diagnosed with various problems with his heart, lungs, and kidneys.

Lam sold their only land lot for VND20 million (USD869) to cover hospital fees for her husband. But she then had to borrow hundreds of millions more when his condition worsened. When she could not borrow more, she brought him home.

The family live in a deteriorating wood house and live on foraging by the two sons in the nearby forest.
