Dantri/Dtinews supports flood victims in southern central region

Dantri/Dtinews Online Newspaper has co-operated with the departments of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs in the two southern central provinces of Binh Dinh and Phu Yen to give out gifts to local people who have been hard hit by the recent floods.

After calling for support from the community for the flood victims, Dantri/Dtinews has so far received over VND 200 million (USD 8,696) from readers. Dantri/Dtinews Editor-in-Chief Pham Tuan Anh has decided to use the money to buy 200 gifts for people in Phu Yen and give financial support of VND 10 million each to 11 families who have lost their houses due to the floods in Binh Dinh Province.

The gifts were given to people on December 24 and 25.


Receiving the support from Dantri/Dtinews and local authorities, Nguyen Van Chau, 55, expressed his sincere thanks and said that they would soon build a new house.


Nguyen Van Chau is rebuilding his house which was destroyed by the floods.

"Our house has been badly damaged by many floods over years," Chau said. "With this money from donors, I will build better foundations to cope with constant flooding here."


Deputy director of Binh Dinh Provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, Nguyen Van Hung, said that local authorities had also given financial support of VND 60 million each to help families whose houses had collapsed in the recent floods.

A report from the Phu Yen Provincial People's Committee said that the floods had left eight people dead, submerged 58,000 houses, and swept away over 2,000 tonnes of food. Hundreds of thousands of animals also died or were also swept away by the floods. The natural disaster caused estimated losses of nearly VND 440 billion (USD 19.13 million).

In the neighbouring province of Binh Dinh, the floods left three dead, two injured, and damaged over 20 houses. Estimated losses were VND 220 billion.
