Le Van Trung and his second child
Nguyen Thi Hong Mo, 34, and her husband Le Van Trung, 36, live with their two sons in a 20-square-metre tent built on a river bank in Phung Hiep District.
Despite living in poverty, the family were happy until their two children were struck with cancer.
Their eldest son, Le Trung Dung, 10, was diagnosed with the last stage of leukaemia two years ago. Despite receiving intensive treatment, he died a week ago.
And while struggling to treat their first son, the couple were shocked when their second son, Le Trung Tin, was also found to have kidney cancer last year when he was just four.
Mo said that her family have spent most of their time at the Ho Chi Minh City Children's Hospital. They just returned home last week after doctors said that they could not save their eldest son.
"He died some days ago," the mother said. "And my second son Tin is also very weak," she said.
According to the couple, they had spent all their savings to pay for their first child's treatment and now really need support from the community to save their second child.
"Doctors said that Tin was in the first stage of cancer and needed regular chemotherapy," the mother said. "At present, he is receiving chemotherapy every week and we have borrowed over VND100 million to pay for the fees. He will need more costly treatment but now I just don't know where to borrow more money."
According to local authorities, the couple are among the most difficult cases in the area. They have a motorbike repair shop but have had to close it to take care of their ill children for a long time. They have lost their first child and still really need support to continue treatment for their second child.
