Some 130 children are being taken care of by 20 single mums at the SOS Children's Village Hai Phong.

The children who were abandoned or lost their parents are taken care of by small families in the village.

According to assistant director of the SOS Children's Village Hai Phong, Dang Duy Toan, there are 14 families in the village and a home for boys from 14 years old. Each family, which is named after a flower, is cared for by a mother.

The assistant director said that most mothers here are between 35-45 years old. Five mothers are between 60 - 62 years old which is the retirement age but the village has not been able to find new staff to replace them.

"The mothers employed to work at the village are widows or women who have divorced," the assistant director said.

"They should be caring, hard-working and patient in order to do their work well. Many people have not qualified enough and have to leave the village after working for a short time."

Mom Do Thi Thang, 62, worked at the village since it was established in 1996. As the oldest mother in the village, she is now taking care of eight children at the Daisy Family. Some children are now only between 2-4 years old.
