Pham Thi Phuong feeds her son Nguyen Van Te
After her husband died three years ago in a traffic accident, Pham Thi Phuong, 50, has become the family's breadwinner to support two ill children.
Phuong and his two sons are living in a house built by local authorities in Ke Sach District's An Thoi Village. Her youngest son, Nguyen Van Te, has suffered from palsy since he was two months old. Te has depended on his parents for all daily activities over the past 25 years.
Meanwhile, her eldest son Nguyen Van Nghia, 26, was seriously injured in a traffic accident three years ago.
"Nghia had brain damage after the accident," she said. "I had to borrow over VND 100 million (USD4,348) to pay for his surgery. And while my son was at the hospital, my husband was also hit in another traffic accident and he died several days later due to serious injuries."
The poor woman said that despite being shocked by these incidents, she had to try her best to take care of her two ill sons.
"Although Nghia has been saved, his health has deteriorated and he now just stays indoors all day and can’t do hard work," she said.
Having to take care of the two ill sons, Phuong has been unable to have a stable job to earn money. And she is constantly worried about the loan of VND100 million.
"I usually do some farm work to have rice and vegetables for our meals," she said. "I can also earn some money when other neighbours hire me to work on their farms. But my sons' health is weak and they fall ilI very often so my income isn't stable."
The mother said that what she worried about most was who would take care of her sons if she fell ill and died.
Speaking about Phuong's family, the head of An Thoi Village, Tran Ngoc Can, said that they were the most difficult case in the area.
"We hope that Phuong will receive help to support her two children," he said.
