A single mum in the southern province of Ben Tre has received financial support of over VND308 million (USD13,391) from the public to help save her small son from cancer after her story was published on Dantri/Dtinews.

Nguyen Thi Han came to Dantri/Dtinews' Ho Chi Minh City office on August 1 to receive VND 280,544,877 from readers that had been sent to the newspaper's charity programme to support her son. On the same day, the Vietnam Study Promotion Fund also gave her VND 28,309,000.

Receiving the donations, Han sent her sincere thanks to all kind donors for their valuable support to her family.

"Many people have called to express their sympathy and sent their best wishes to us," she said.

The young mother also shared that her son was getting better while receiving treatment at the hospital.

"He has undergone four cycles of chemotherapy and he is gaining weight," she said. "As he is improving, I can still go to work to earn money for our daily life."

Han, 30, got married while working in Ho Chi Minh City and gave birth to her son Nguyen Chi Thien in 2015. The couple divorced when Thien was three years old.

Han after that sent her son to live with her elderly parents in Ben Tre while staying in Ho Chi Minh City to earn money.

Besides her usual work, she tried to do part-time jobs to earn some more money to support her parents and son. With a modest income of VND8 million (USD344.82) per month, she sent VND6 million home.

Tragedy struck when her son was diagnosed with leukaemia in early February this year after suffering a fever and cough. She was extremely shocked to hear the news. She had to leave her job in Ho Chi Minh City and returned to Ben Tre to take care of her son.

According to doctors, Chi Thien’s condition could be much improved if treated properly.
