A single woman in Hanoi’s outlying district of My Duc is in desperate need of support as she is facing lymphoma while pregnant.

Nguyen Thi Luyen, 36, from Dong Ma Village, experienced her father dying when she was just six years old and her mother is blind.

Due to the family’s financial difficulties, Luyen and his brother could not go to school. Their childhood was days working along canals to catch fish and crabs to sell.

In 2005 when Luyen was 19 years old, she was trafficked into China. She tried to commit suicide when in China. However, she overcame this feeling when thinking of her blind mother and brother at home.

In 2015, she escaped from China and returned to her hometown. But after that, she displayed symbols of mental illness, particularly when she discovered her brother had died already. Her mother had to borrow money to take her to hospitals for treatment.

When she recovered, she came to Hanoi to work on a construction site where she fell in love with a married man in Nghe An and then became pregnant. He left her when she gave birth to a daughter who is four years old now.

Three months ago, Luyen faced high fevers and her neck became swollen. She also fainted at her workplace. After being taken to the hospital, she was diagnosed with lymphoma. At that time, she was in the 23rd month of her pregnancy.

According to doctors, being pregnant will affect the efficiency of her treatment, but Luyen is determined to keep the 35-week baby.

Nguyen Van Que, head of Dong Ma Village, said that Luyen is the only person for her disabled mother to rely on. The local authorities have called for donations for Luyen, but this proved very modest. He hoped that donors could support her.
