Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper has just completed the construction of a new school dormitory in a remote area in the northern central province of Nghe An.

The opening ceremony for a new dormitory at Mai Son Boarding Primary and Secondary School in Tuong Duong District was held on Tuesday.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Editor-In-Chief of Dantri/Dtinews Nguyen Xuan Toan expressed happiness that over 120 students would now have better accommodation.

"From now the students here will no longer have to fear the cold winter or hot summer weather," Toan said. "I'm happy that we've completed another project for people in difficult areas. We hope that the project will help improve the conditions for students here. I want to send my thanks to the Giao Hang Tiet Kiem Company for their donations to the project."

Earlier on May 10, the Giao Hang Tiet Kiem Company visited Dantri/Dtinews in Hanoi to offer more than VND 870 million (USD 37,826) to help build the new school dormitory after the story about the students here suffering poor boarding facilities was published by the newspaper.

Mai Son Boarding Primary and Secondary School is located around 10 kilometres from the communal centre. Most of the students are from the Thai, Kho Mu and Mong ethnic groups who have to stay at the school due to the long distance from home and difficult mountainous roads.

The old boarding facility

The school had upgraded a storehouse into a day-boarding room. Due to financial difficulties, the school mobilised parents to make bamboo beds for the room. However, the makeshift facility quickly deteriorated and lacked lots of equipment for children's daily activities.

Speaking at the opening event of the new dormitory, school headmaster Dao Xuan Hai, expressed his sincere thanks to Dantri/Dtinews and kind donors for their support.

"We now have five new dormitories with full equipment for 120 students in our school," he said. "I want to send my sincere thanks to Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper and Giao Hang Tiet Kiem Company for your valuable support for us."

At the ceremony, Dantri/Dtinews also gave scholarships to students with difficult backgrounds and presents including water purifiers, blankets, mats, and mosquito nets, to students at the school.
