The family of four members live in a small house in Phu Hoa District's Cam Son Village.

The mother, Nguyen Thi Thu Liem, 48, said that both her 11-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son are suffering from Cushing's syndrome which developed five years ago.

"They have faced various health problems caused by the disease including obesity, stomachaches, and constant headaches," she said in tears. "They're having to take lots of medicine to ease their headaches every day. We have to take them to hospitals every month for further checkups. Doctors said that if the disease is not treated properly, our children may face further serious problems that could not be cured."

The mother said that they've had to sell everything worth money in their house to cover treatment for their children. They've also had to borrow money from the bank and couldn’t borrow more."

"We've always faced financial difficulties since our children fell ill," she said. "While I couldn't do anything but take care of them, my husband's modest income as a construction worker was only enough to cover daily food and some other expenses.

Vice chairman of Hoa Quang Bac Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Thai Binh, said that Liem's family was now the most difficult case in the area.

"We've also tried to give them some support but they need more to cover treatment for their children," the official said. "I hope that they will receive more support from the public to get over this difficult time and the children will get proper treatment to recover from the disease."
