Ho Thi Van, 78, said that she has three sons who all have weak health caused by Agent Orange that she might have been exposed to when joining the American War during the 1960s. While the eldest Nguyen Ba Hung, 49, and the youngest Nguyen Ba Phuong, 38, have better health condition, her second son Nguyen Ba Cuong, 47, suffers serious amyotrophia and only weighs nearly 10 kilos.

"I was not afraid of death while joining the war, but now I'm afraid of it," Van said. "I want to live to take care of my disabled son. However, my left eye has gone blind and my right eye also has poor sight. Now I can only do some light housework."

According to the mother, Cuong was born ailing and has had to depend on others for all daily activities. Her husband died many years ago, and she has raised three children including two with disabilities on her own.

"Luckily my youngest son Phuong has better health," she said. "Although his family is also poor with four small children, he and his wife have invited us to come and live with them and they've helped us a lot. My eldest son Hung is also disabled in his legs, but he's married and can live on his own with some allowances from the government."

Phuong said that to have a better house to replace the old one which had badly deteriorated, they had to borrow VND200 million and haven't been able to repay it over the past seven years.

Speaking to Dantri/Dtinews, chairman of Quynh Thach Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Sy Luc, said that Van's family was the most difficult case in the area.

"Although they have received some allowances and support from the government and local authorities, their lives are still very difficult and I hope that they will receive more support from kind donors," the official said.
