Second 68 leaves Woods well off the pace

Tiger Woods carded his second straight 68 but found himself well off the pace in third round of the US PGA Tour\'s Frys.com Open.

Tiger Woods makes an approach shot on the 10th hole during the third round of the Frys.com Open at the CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, California.

The former world number one on Saturday posted back-to-back rounds in the 60s for the first time since his first event of 2011 -- at Torrey Pines in January.

Woods, who started in the first group off the 10th tee, briefly moved within three shots of the lead after back-to-back birdies at one and two.

But he lost momentum with bogeys at two of his last seven holes -- both of them par-threes.

At the par-three third, his tee shot was buried in a greenside bunker and he took two shots to get out.

At the par-three seventh, Woods was in tall grass off the tee and he blasted out over the green en route to a bogey.

In all he notched five birdies on the day and finished with a 54-hole total of four-under 209.

That was nine strokes behind third-round leader Briny Baird and in a tie for 38th.

"I was very close to really putting it together on the front nine - birdie 17 and 18, and all of a sudden, I\'m five-under," said Woods, but that scenario remained in the realm of "what if?"

Woods did cap his round with a birdie at the par-five ninth, but regretted that he couldn\'t make more of good scoring conditions on the par-71 CordeValle course

"The golf course could have been had today," he said.

Woods, winner of 14 major titles, hasn\'t won a tournament since 2009.

His equal fourth place at the Masters in April was his best result so far this season, and he suffered knee and tendon injuries at Augusta and played sparingly since.

He withdrew hurt from the first round of the Players Championship in May and finished tied for 37th at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in August.

He missed the cut at the PGA Championship, his last prior US tour start.

After this week, Woods is due to have another month off before heading to Australia for the Australian Open and the Presidents Cup, where he will play as a captain\'s pick by Fred Couples in the matchplay showdown between the United States and an international team.
