Vietnamese audiences call out lip syncing performers

In the last few years, many V-pop stars have been caught lip syncing on stage, causing a furious backlash from their fans.

Singer Quynh Nga

Last year saw a particularly large number of such incidents, the most prominent involving singer Quynh Nga who accidentally dropped her microphone while dancing. The music continued, however, revealing that she had been lip syncing the entire time.

Despite the fact that lip syncs are quite common during live performances, the practice in Vietnam seems to cause continual outrage. The singer, Thu Thuy, was exposed in a similar situation at the H2Teen Concert in Hanoi.

Audiences were also shocked to hear Thuy Tien's voice while her microphone was too far from her mouth at the recent Zing Music Awards festival. This was not the first time she was caught in her act.

I'm so sorry... or am I?

Many performers all over the world use the same methods in order to ensure the quality of their performances. Still, in Vietnam, audiences come to concerts with an expectation of seeing an actual live performance. When disappointed, they often expect a sincere apology.

Quynh Nga made such an apology, saying, "I'm very sorry if I have disappointed my fans. I promise to work harder in the time to come to give my fans what they came for."

On the other hand, some of the other apologies do not seem to satisfy fans. Thuy Tien, for example, refused to take responsibility, saying that the organisers asked her to lip sync because of some sound problems.

After lip syncing during the awarding ceremony of Lan Song Xanh or Green Wave music award 2009, Wanbi Tuan Anh also offered apologies, but laid blame on the organisation board, "A lot of other singers lip-synced that night, but I was caught because of carelessness. I was just very nervous after receiving the award."

Thuy Tien outright refused to admit that there was anything wrong with the practice. "I chose to have a pre-recorded track play in the background. This helps to interact more with the crowd."

Many in the audience disagreed, complaining that the background track drowned out her actual voice.
